Artist Karl Mullen will open his studio to the public from June 11th to June 15th, showcasing a diverse selection of his prolific artwork.
Located in his 19th-century barn , Mullen’s studio will offer a unique glimpse into his non-traditional artistic process. Described by poet Cassandra J. Cleghorn, Mullen’s studio is a space where “his palette is the larder: red wine, walnut oil and ink, Barry's tea, pastes in silver tins, powders like exotic spices.” Visitors will have the opportunity to witness the tangible results of his distinctive approach, where he often uses his hands, palette knives, and even kitchen utensils to create “distinctive, poetic figures that float on fields of color.”
The studio houses a large body of Mullen's work, highlighting his exploration of both familiar and fantastical elements. His pieces often incorporate found materials like old book pages and sheet music, adding layers of history and texture to his luminous images.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1954, Karl Mullen has developed a unique style utilizing walnut oil, raw powder pigment, and wax medium. His work has been shown in galleries across North America and Europe, including the Outsider Art Fair in New York. Beyond his visual art, Mullen is also an accomplished musician, known for his work with the Pittsburgh punk band Carsickness and his collaborations with the Koresh Dance Company in Philadelphia, for whom he creates soundscapes and spoken word pieces. He currently performs his music with “5 Pound Horse” based in Williamstown/North Adams and are appearing at the legendary Berkshire venue The Dream Away Lodge on Sat June 14 at 8 PM
